What is a Competitive Positioning Map?

A Competitive Positioning Map is a visual tool that plots your website alongside its top organic competitors on a two-dimensional chart. By comparing the number of ranking keywords (X-axis) and organic search traffic (Y-axis), you instantly see where each domain stands in the competitive landscape. The bubble size reflects the competition level — how aggressively each domain contests your keyword space.

Unlike raw data tables, a positioning map makes patterns unmistakable: you can spot niche leaders, high-traffic generalists, and overlooked gaps in an instant, making it the fastest way to build a smarter SEO strategy.

How to Use the Competitive Positioning Map Tool

Using this free tool takes just seconds:

• Enter your domain (e.g. yoursite.com) in the box above.
• Complete the CAPTCHA and click Analyze Competitors.
• The tool fetches live data from the Semrush database — no signup required.
• Review the interactive bubble chart, competitor table, and keyword gap cards.
• Use the SEO Action Plan section to prioritize your content rewrites.

Understanding the Metrics

It provides detailed information on a variety of metrics, including:

1. Competition Level

Ranges from 0 to 1 (0% to 100%). A higher value means the competitor aggressively targets the same keywords as you. Focus your content rewrite efforts on domains scoring 50%+ first.

2. Common Keywords

The number of keywords both you and the competitor rank for in Google's top 100. A large overlap is both an opportunity and a threat: you compete head-to-head on these terms, so improving your rankings here has maximum impact.

3. Keyword Gap

Keywords your competitor ranks for that you don't appear for (within the top 100 results). Each gap card estimates how many of those keywords you could realistically capture — your Keyword Opportunity Score.

4. Organic Traffic Value

An estimate of how much you would pay in Google Ads to generate the same level of organic traffic. Higher values indicate more commercially valuable keyword portfolios — a strong signal for where to focus content investment.

5. SERP Features

The number of SERP feature positions (Featured Snippets, People Also Ask, Image Packs, etc.) held by each domain. Competitors with many SERP features capture disproportionate click-share — target these with structured data markup.

How to Close the Keyword Gap

Once you identify keyword gaps, the fastest ways to close them are:

Content expansion — Add missing topics to existing pages rather than creating new ones to avoid cannibalization.
Cluster strategy — Build a pillar page + 5–10 supporting articles around each gap cluster.
On-page rewrite — Update titles, headings, and body copy to include exact-match and semantic variations of gap keywords.
Schema markup — Add FAQ, How-To, and Article schema to compete for SERP features currently owned by competitors.
Internal linking — Connect your new gap-targeting content to high-authority pages to pass link equity.

Repeat this analysis monthly to track your progress and spot new opportunities as the competitive landscape shifts.

Why Trust This Data?

The positioning coordinates and competitor groupings generated by this tool are calculated using aggregate organic search data. By analyzing search engine results pages (SERPs) for millions of queries, we identify which domains consistently overlap with yours on high-value terms. This panel-based reporting mirrors the real-world visibility of your brand and your direct competitors in search engine listings.

While direct traffic numbers in internal suites like Google Analytics or Search Console measure click-throughs to your own pages, they cannot show you how your competitors are performing. This competitive map fills that gap by applying the exact same statistical model across all domains, ensuring you get an accurate, consistent benchmark of your relative market share and share of voice.
